History of Galloway Township, New Jersey:

Galloway Township was incorporated by Royal Patent on April 4th 1774. At the time it was part of old Gloucester County, and consisted of what is now Hammonton, Egg harbor city, Mullica Township & the northern part of Absecon. Galloway's first inhabitants were Lenni-Lenape native Americans, who were followed by European settlers. During the revolutionary war, galloway was a crucial shipping area & the site of the battle of chestnut neck. The first railroad running through Galloway arrived in 1854. Historians are unsure as to the etymology of Galloway's name. There are 2 theories surrounding it; the first one purporting that it is named after an area in Scotland known as Galloway Mull. The second theory is that it was named after Joseph Galloway the loyalist delegate to the continental congress.
